“Social media is not the problem but it can be a catalyst for problems that already exist in the life of a teenager” – Dr. Sherry Turkle
Social media has become an integral part of modern life and teenagers are no exception. Various social media platforms have revolutionized the way teens interact, communicate and share their experiences. However, the impact of social media on teenagers is a complex and multifaceted issue that raises concerns about their mental health, self – esteem and online safety.
Social media enables students to join online groups and communities having similar interest and helps them to express their creativity and share their talent. This definitely gives a boost to their self esteem and helps them build self-confidence. However, excessive social media usage has been directly associated with low self-esteem, anxiety and loneliness. Exposure to screen and constant notifications can interfere with sleep patterns and decrease concentration. To alleviate these, parents and educators need to set boundaries, monitor usage and help teens maintain a healthy balance between online and offline life. Educating teens about online safety including hazards of cyberbullying and blocking unwanted contacts is of utmost importance. The constant stream of information on social media can be overwhelming and teenagers need guidance to navigate their path and thrive in the digital age.
Social media can be a powerful tool for connection but it can also create a culture of comparison and unhealthy competition among the teenagers. Ultimately, social media is a double – edged sword that can have both positive and negative impacts on teenagers. By being aware of these risks and taking steps to promote responsible social media use, we can help teens harness the benefits of social media while minimizing its risks. By working together, we can create a healthier and more positive online environment that supports the well- being and development of teenagers.
Encouraging offline activities, supporting hobbies, sports and face to face interactions will definitely help teens maintain a healthy balance between online and offline life.
